Welcome, about me
Meiling Lorenz was born and raised in Taiwan.
This beautiful island – Formosa – nurtured Meiling with her rich and multicultural heritage that she holds great gratitude to. Both her family in Taiwan and the country provided every possible resource and opportunity to make the individual who she is.
In addition to the fundamental calligraphy classes in school, the outstanding calligraphy skill of Meiling’s grandfather laid a firm foundation for her admiration and interest in brush work and art. She received her only Chinese painting class from a community painting course while she was attending college in Taiwan. Meiling furthered and broadened her horizon into western art and explored this wonderland in the many following years, particularly during her study, work and extensive travel in Asia, Europe and North America between 1987 and 1997.
Meiling immigrated to Canada with her husband and family in 1997 and received a Visual Art diploma from Vancouver Island University in 2017. She was awarded with Arts Club Award for Visual Arts 1st Year Drawing Award in 2007 and Art Endowment Award Willie Brown Memorial Sculpture Award in 2008 during her study in VIU. Now, Meiling is a full time painter concentrating on Chinese brush painting and endeavours to develop a personal style incorporating western and Chinese watercolour skills.
For thousands of years Flora and Birds occupied an important portion and position in traditional Chinese painting. Countless ancient and recent artists have paid much tribute and attention to this subject matter. For Meiling, having resided on Vancouver Island for over 25 years, the colorful and beautiful environment has provided her much inspiration for creativity. Being a Christian with great enjoyment in God’s rich speaking of grace and life, she often quotes verses from the Holy Bible Recovery Version on her works.
It is a great honour for Meiling Lorenz to share with the viewers the passion in her new creation from the traditional Chinese water colour.

Traditional Oriental Art
The format used for Chinese paintings has varied widely over time. Massive wall paintings, free-standing screens, horizontal and vertical scrolls and later framed pictures, were some of the formats used. Generally, after my paintings are completed, they can be mated and framed with a wooden frame or mounted into vertical hanging scroll.
Materials needed for Chinese painting are: Brushes, ink, pigmentations, xuan paper(known as rice paper in western society). Silk or repp fabric(Ling Bu) for matting, wood dowels and backing paper for scroll. Silk or repp fabric(Ling Bu) for matting, backing paper and wood frame for framed picture.
